Investigating dietary habits, anthropometric profile, and hormone levels of women of childbearing age with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Abstract

Background :

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder affecting women of reproductive age, with a global prevalence estimated between 4 and 18%. Diet and anthropometric status are recognized as key modifiable contributors to disease severity.

Objective :

This study aimed to determine the dietary habits, anthropometric profile, and hormone levels of women of childbearing age diagnosed with PCOS. Methods : A cross-sectional, observational study was conducted across three tertiary care hospitals in Rawalpindi between June and August 2023. Using convenience sampling, 100 women of childbearing age diagnosed with PCOS (per Rotterdam criteria) were enrolled. Data on demographics, anthropometric measurements, hormonal levels, and dietary intake were collected through a structured, pre-tested questionnaire and food frequency questionnaire, then analyzed using SPSS version 26.

Results :

Participants had a mean age of 30.01±6.16 years and a mean BMI of 30.79±4.29 kg/m², indicating a predominantly obese cohort. Mean waist circumference was 87.78±4.24 cm and waist to hip ratio was 0.78±0.13. Mean hormonal values were LH 8.10±1.37 IU/I, FSH 3.26±0.63 IU/I, and total/free testosterone 3.02±0.82 ng/dl. Dietary assessment revealed elevated consumption of dairy, refined cereals, fats, nuts, and sweets, alongside low intake of fruits, vegetables, and lean protein. Common complaints included painful menstruation (56%), abdominal bloating (56%), and weight gain (52%).

Conclusion:

Women with PCOS showed anthropometric measurements above normal ranges alongside poor, imbalanced dietary patterns. These findings highlight the need for structured nutritional counseling and early lifestyle intervention to manage the metabolic and reproductive burden of PCOS.
