Incidence of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) among epileptic patients in Mansoura university hospitals
Abstract
Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most frequent endocrinopathy, influencing females, from adult to following menopause. Its occurrence is among ten and thirteen percent.
Aim: To study the incidence of PCOS among epileptic patients in Mansoura University Hospitals.
Methods: This was cross-sectional observational research included 163 women in the reproductive age diagnosed by Neurologists as epilepsy admitted and/or followed up at Neurology Department of Mansoura University Hospital and outpatient obstetrics and gynecology clinic during the period from December 2022 to April 2024.
Results: PCOS was diagnosed in 57.06% of participants. Among PCOS cases, phenotype C (Oligo/anovulation, polycystic ovarian morphology on ultrasound) (27.6%) was the most common. Generalized epilepsy was more frequent in PCOS cases (82.8%) than focal epilepsy. Notably, 43% of PCOS cases had childhood-onset epilepsy, and 24.7% developed PCOS after Antiepileptic drugs initiation.
Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that PCOS was increased in cases with childhood-onset epilepsy. After the initiation of antiepileptic treatment there was increase in PCOS cases, there was a potential influence of both epilepsy and its treatment on PCOS development. Phenotype C (Oligo/anovulation, polycystic ovarian morphology on ultrasound) was the most prevalent (27.6%), followed by type B (Oligo/anovulation, hyperandrogenism) (22.08%).
