A study on breast feeding practices among children up to 24 months of age in selected villages of Wardha
Abstract
Infant feeding practices have significant effects on both mothers and children. Proper infant feeding, starting from the time of birth, is important for the physical and mental development of children. UNICEF and WHO recommends that infant should exclusively breast feed for first 4 to 6 months of life and continue breast feeding together with weaning food up to and beyond second year of life.
Objective: To assess Knowledge, attitude and practice of breastfeeding among mother of children up to 24 months of age in selected village of Anji, Wardha, Maharashtra, a field practice area of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Sewagram.
Methodology: Cross sectional study was conducted in selected villages of Anji Primary Health Center which belongs to field practice area of Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences Sewagram. Mothers of children up to 24 months of age who came to attend Village Health Nutrition Day were asked to participate in the study. The mothers who gave verbal consent were included in the study. We could collect information from 50 mothers using predesigned and pretested semi structured questionnaire regarding socio-demographic profile along with knowledge, attitude and practice towards breast feeding were asked to mothers. Analysis was done using EPI INFO.
Results:70% of children were exclusively breast feed. Majority of the mother started complementary feeding when the child was 6 months of age and 66% of mothers do not know about the importance of colostrum. 86% of mothers have the knowledge to continue breast feed till 24 months of age.70%of the mother had no Knowledge of contraceptive advantages of breast- feeding practices.
