Tehran Universities of Medical Sciences, IranTitle: Investigating the outcomes of different methods of weaning in children covered by health centers affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2021
Abstract
Background: Weaning from the breast is a natural,
inevitable stage in a child’s development. It is a complex process involving
nutritional, immunological, biochemical, and psychological adjustments. Weaning
can be a manifestation of cultural differences. Cultural misconceptions can
lead to unsafe weaning methods. In Iran traditional methods are commonly used
for weaning. Traditional methods can weaken the bond of trust between the
mother.
Materials and
Methods: This study was a
retrospective cross-sectional study that was conducted in 2021 in health
centers affiliated to Tehran Medical Sciences. 420 dyad of mother and their
children were selected through multi-stage cluster sampling. First, 14
districts of Tehran were randomly selected as clusters and then the samples
were selected by convenience sampling. The data collection tool in this study
was a checklist containing 30 questions. After collecting information and
recording in SPSS 27 software, the data were analyzed and reported by using
descriptive statistical methods.
Results: The mean age of the child at the time of
weaning was 21.49 months. The methods frequently used for weaning were spices,
glue, doctor recommended medication and hormonal medications. The most
reported negative outcome of weaning were anxiety and restlessness in children
(87.1%) and guilt (29.8%) and regret (28.1%) for mothers. Non-medical methods
of weaning had a statistically significant correlation with child's fever and
lethargy (p=0.029). The medicinal method of weaning had a significant
relationship with the mother's breastfeeding fever (p=0.02).
Conclusion: It
can be concluded that a high percentage of mothers have used traditional
methods of weaning which can be potentially harmful. As a result, mothers need
special training about the methods of weaning to be able to wean their children
safely. Health education by health care providers applying formal weaning
guidelines is a valid approach to help mothers cope with weaning-related
challenges.
