Title: The Effect of Opioids During Labour on Breastfeeding

Abstract

Opioids during labour are widely used in midwifery practice as means for pain relief (El-Wahab & Robinson 2014).
The effects of opioids during labour on breastfeeding are varied and can be experienced by both mother and baby (Fleet et al 2015).
The effects of opioids use during labour on breastfeeding was discussed with 10 midwives at Mater Dei Hospital in Malta. One of the themes identified in this study was the difficulties associated with breastfeeding in relation to opioid use, such as; maternal fatigue and sleepy babies. Another theme identified was midwives’ challenges and interventions to initiate breastfeeding. During these semi-structured interviews, midwives identified various methods used in order to aid mothers and babies to cope with ill-effects of opioids in relation to breastfeeding. These included; finger feeding, skin-to-skin contact, etc.

Midwives’ ongoing breastfeeding care and support was another theme discussed in this study. Midwives identified different methods for ongoing support such as the Breastfeeding Clinic as one of the most important services used to provide ongoing support to mothers and babies in need. This study enabled the author to identify different effects of opioid use during labour on breastfeeding, several methods used to aid such adverse effects as well as ongoing care provided by the midwives at Mater Dei Hospital in Malta.
