Abstract
Introduction:
Maternal Mortality is a significant global burden and is especially heightened in low-resource countries such as Uganda. This has been recognised by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and they have subsequently piloted an emergency obstetrics course training for healthcare workers within Masaka region, Uganda. During the courses a new cadre of healthcare workers were scouted; Master Trainers, their role being to teach peers the course contents to attain sustainability of this course.
As there is no existing qualitative data regarding experiences of the resilience and excellence in obstetrics courses, this study aims to explore the outcomes, challenges, sustainability and future directions of the courses from the perspective of MTs.
Methods:
Three semi-structured interviews were undertaken virtually between September 2022-January 2023, two on Zoom and one via WhatsApp voice notes secondary to connection difficulties. Interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed using framework analysis.
Results:
All participants spoke of positive outcomes in terms of personal and professional development, improved clinical competency and reduction in maternal mortality rate. Many unexpected positive outcomes were also noted such as improvements to team morale, career development and formation of WhatsApp Groups. All participants agreed that funding posed the largest challenge and sustainability was noted to be important in order to continue the positive outcomes of the course.
Conclusions:
This study echoes literature on the potential of emergency obstetric courses in low-income courses. This study further highlights the importance of sustainability when implementing an intervention such as the Resilience and Excellence in Obstetrics courses.
