Midwives attitudes towards postpartum depression
Abstract
Introduction: The period of pregnancy and the few months following childbirth is characterized as a vulnerable time for mothers. During this period, mothers are at an increased risk of developing anxiety, which can lead to postpartum depression. Midwives are the healthcare professionals responsible for providing care to pregnant women, mothers and promoting their mental well-being.
Aim: To investigate the attitudes of midwives towards postpartum depression.
Material and Method: A qualitative design with purposive sampling was employed. The sample consisted of eight (8) registered midwives. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews, and data analysis was performed according to the thematic analysis framework of Braun and Clarke (2006).
Results: From data synthesis, four (4) themes emerged: 1) Training of Midwives, 2) Midwives' Views on Mothers with Postpartum Depression (PPD), 3) Care Provided for women with PPD, and 4) Social Stigma Related to PPD.
Conclusions: Healthcare professionals face significant challenges in providing care to women with PPD. Barriers must be addressed, and systemic changes related to the provision of mental health care for PPD must be implemented.
