Action 4 Health , UgandaTitle: Family Size Preferences, Sexual Activity, Fertility Behavior, and Intention to Use Family Planning Among Female Non-Users of Family Planning in Uganda
Abstract
At 5.4 children
per woman on average, Uganda has one of the highest fertility rates worldwide.
Despite efforts to increase access to family planning services in Uganda, many
women do not use family planning methods. Although previous studies have looked
at family planning use and determinants among Ugandan women, there needs to be
more research on non-users of family planning. This study sought to fill this
knowledge gap by examining family size preferences, sexual activity, fertility
behavior, and intention to use family planning among Ugandan female non-users
of family planning.
This study
relied on secondary data from the 2016 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey
(UDHS). Frequency distribution was used to describe the traits of the
respondents. The association between the intention to use family planning in
the future and each explanatory variable was examined using the Pearson
chi-square test. A binary logistic regression model was employed at the
multivariate level to identify the predictors of intention to use family
planning.
Our findings
indicate that more than half (54%) of the women who had never used any family
planning method intended to use family planning in the future. The intention to
use family planning in the future among women who had never used family
planning was associated with family size preference, sexual activity, marital
status, number of children ever born, and knowledge about family planning as
well as socio-demographic factors including age, education level attained,
religion, region of residence.
The study
emphasizes the importance of family size preferences, as well as sexual and
fertility behaviors, on future demand for family planning, which is essential
for the sustainable realization of Uganda's demographic dividend. Investment in
sexual and reproductive health will improve maternal health in the future while
also hastening fertility reduction to capitalize on Uganda's demographic
dividend.
