Abstract
The frequency of
emotional disorders (most often depression) in fathers in the postpartum period
only is estimated at 1.2–25.5%. The presence of postpartum emotional
disturbances in a woman may induce symptoms of depression in her partner. The
aim of the study was to assess life satisfaction and emotional control skills
in men in the postpartum period. The study involved partners of women with
symptoms of postpartum depression. Symptoms of depression in women in early
puerperium were assessed on the basis of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression
Scale (> 11 points). In the study of men, the tools used were the Life
Satisfaction Scale and the Emotion Control Scale. The results of the study
showed that sociodemographic variables affect both life satisfaction and the
ability to control emotions in men in the postpartum period. The stereotypical suppression
on showing weakness and affection by men may lead to masking or underestimating
emerging or worsening symptoms of depression. Postpartum depression in fathers
is a poorly researched issue that requires further clinical research, including
neurophysiological and social studies. The knowledge obtained in this way may
contribute to effective primary and secondary prevention in the future.
