Title: Kangaroo care.(Skin to Skin)

Abstract

“Kangaroo care” evolved out of necessity.
Doctors who conducted a study of the kangaroo care noticed a precipitous drop in neonatal mortality - babies surviving and thriving.
Dr. Susan Ludington is one of the people who have been most instrumental in bringing kangaroo care to the United States. She has been intimately involved in many research projects,
Reduce mortality by 40% when introduced to clinically stable hospitalised infants with a birth weight less than 2.0k.
Further 25% reduction in mortality when KC is initiated immediately after birth.
Early initiation of KC could save up to 150,000 more lives each year.

Outdated Practice
There is enormous pressure to separate mothers and babies for reasons that could be delayed or are medically unnecessary. During pregnancy, babies are as close to their moms as they can be—getting warmth, food, protection, and oxygen from their mother’s body. Then, labor occurs and babies suddenly find themselves without immediate access to those essential needs.

When babies are held naked against their mother’s skin, it is the closest they can get to being back in the warmth and security of the womb. Whenever possible, mothers and babies should be in direct contact for at least the first 1–2 hours after birth.  In skin-to-skin care, the baby is naked -placed on the mother’s bare chest, between her breasts. A blanket should be draped over both of them for warmth. you will see the benefits of skin-to-skin care become evident as both mother and baby bond.  The baby’s body temperature, breathing, and heart rate stabilize.

Conclusion
Skin-to-skin care provides a host of benefits for babies well beyond a newborn’s first days.

It improves heart and lung function stabilizes a baby’s body temperature and blood sugar levels, transfers good bacteria, and helps relieve any pain from clinical procedures.

It also enhances parent-baby communication, boosts parent-child bonding, reduces crying, helps a mom and baby initiate breastfeeding, and calms a hungry or weary child.
