Title: The Intricate Balance of Weaving the Science and the Art of Midwifery Together

Abstract

When the world closed down in March of 2020 in a global pandemic, medical services as we knew them came to an almost abrupt halt which left the world panicked and confused. We quickly lost 'humane' healthcare and were at a loss for what to do or how to proceed. In a world of mass confusion there was one thing that withstood the test of time and technology: The Community of Midwives. This worldwide community was forced to pivot and intuitively return to our ‘ancestral remembering’, having to tap back into the practice of Midwifery as an Art, instead of as a Science, because, in that brief time, there was no science available to us. The delicate and gentle balance between the current scientific view of the management of Obstetrics and the skill of this ancient art form - Midwifery, needs to be revisited and viewed in a different light as we move into a post-2020 world, with the glaring reality that we can never fully depend on one system of Healthcare again.

During this session, Lindsey will take conference attendees into a deep dive back into the forgotten ‘her'story of medicine throughout the ages, which has always had Midwives at the forefront of healthcare. She will discuss how these medicine women, trusted healers, the original "family medicine docs", and "pharmacists", that historically held sacred space from womb to tomb in our villages and cities have always been Midwives. She will weave the forgotten stories of a dark history into a positive plan of action for a forged future, where we come together with a common goal. As she moves through the presentation, conference attendees will focus on the origins of their ancestral calling, and relearn the importance of using our bodies as teachers, while learning that indeed, intuition might be the single most important tool they bring with them to a birth.
