Maternal health & Congenital anomalies: Pathways to better outcomes
Abstract
Children born
with congenital anomalies such as cleft lip/palate (CL/P) and ectodermal
dysplasia (ED) face unique and significant challenges that profoundly impact
their quality of life, particularly concerning feeding, speech development, and
psychosocial well-being. The initial difficulties in feeding can lead to
nutritional deficiencies and growth faltering, while subsequent speech
impediments and distinctive facial features often contribute to social
isolation and psychological distress. These conditions necessitate a
multifaceted and long-term care approach from infancy through adolescence.
In this presentation, we will provide an in-depth
exploration of the etiologies of children affected by CL/P and ED. Crucially,
we will outline the multidisciplinary management strategies, emphasizing the
importance of a collaborative team comprising craniofacial surgeons, orthodontists,
speech therapists, genetic counselors, nutritionists, and psychologists.
Rehabilitation strategies will be thoroughly examined, focusing on surgical
interventions for CL/P repair, dental prosthetics and implants for ED, and
ongoing therapeutic support to address speech, feeding, and psychosocial
challenges. By shedding light on the complexities and current advancements in
care for children with these birth defects, we aim to foster improved outcomes
and enhance the overall health and well-being of this vulnerable pediatric
population.
