Title: Learn Share Care – Improving Neonatal Transitional Care Through a Multidisciplinary Teaching Intervention

Abstract

Objective: The project aimed to improve multidisciplinary work and care of babies on the postnatal ward by implementing a regular and sustainable transitional care study day, jointly led by midwifery and neonatal teams.

Methods: To identify learning needs, three areas were selected for review; survey of frontline staff, review of problems encountered on transitional care unit and analysis of clinic incidents. From this data we were able to derive four overarching transitional care learning themes that would form the basis of the course. Training content was designed with multidisciplinary input from 22 staff members, representing all roles within a transitional care unit. Staff’s self-reported confidence in common transitional care scenarios was assessed using a 5-point scale before and after the training day.

Results: A total of 295 healthcare professionals have been trained from 19 NHS trusts through 6 transitional care study days between January 2022 and February 2023. Attendees reported an overall increase in confidence in working in transitional care by +1.8 point (5 point scale). Participants ranked the usefulness of the training day as an average of 9.4 (10-point scale) with learning needs met or exceeded for 99%.

Conclusion: The targeted transitional care study day proved to be beneficial to midwives in increasing confidence in managing common scenarios faced in day-to-day practice and should be made available to all staff working on postnatal ward. In the UK, over 90% of babies born are managed on the postnatal ward, with care being largely delivered by the midwifery team. This proportion is set to rise further with the trend towards midwifery led transitional care, therefore, ensuring postnatal staff are adequately trained to meet this growing demand is crucial. Going forward, we plan to share our experience and this educational package nationally and internationally with units who are developing transitional care services.
