Presentation Title:

Bridge the gap - the integral role of the midwife in the management of women and couples seeking fertility assistance

Abstract

Infertility is a condition in which a couple fails to conceive after one year of unprotected intercourse. Infertility affects 1 in 6 persons globally, with 30% of cases due to male and female factors, 15% due to unexplained infertility, and 25% due to a combination of causes. Assuming that childbearing will occur naturally as they desire, the majority of couples spend the majority of their reproductive years making plans to avoid an unintended pregnancy. The family is in disarray when this doesn't occur. By managing appropriate communication, representing the couple, financial counselling, clinic-based support groups, stress management, and psychological support the midwives play a critical role in bridging the gap between patients and clinicians. Midwives should have a clear idea on time of evaluation of the couple, based on various factors like age, duration of unprotected intercourse and history of any other contributing factors like endometriosis or ovulatory dysfunction. Initial counselling and guidance for proper treatment is most needed for the couple.

In my presentation, I want to focus on the fundamentals of infertility care and the vital role midwives play in facilitating communication between couples seeking reproductive support and clinicians.
